Startup Daily partners with General Assembly to host panel discussion on scaling globally
With Foreign Minister Julie Bishop spruiking Australian innovation to American businesses on a recent trip to North America and US investors heading down to Melbourne to discuss investment in Australian companies, there has never been a better time to think about scaling internationally – so Startup Daily has partnered with General Assembly to host a guided panel discussion on what it takes to launch, scale and take a local startup to the global stage.
To be held in the offices of development agency Vivant this Wednesday, the event will see moderator Mat Beeche gain insights and candid advice from Natasha Prasad, regional general manager of ClassPass Australia; Gen George, founder of OneShift Jobs; Bill Bartee, cofounder of Blackbird Ventures; and Matt O Kane, vice president of technical operations and talent at Freelancer.com on how they have grown their businesses locally while keeping an eye on global expansion since day one.
Topics to be covered include:
- How they started – from idea to launch to global player
- Understanding trends and traits in successful global startups
- Tips on financing, revenue generation and monetisation for your ideas
- Know the pitfalls to avoid and the ideal investment partners to help you scale
- How to gauge opportunity in overseas markets
The panel’s expertise covers every aspect of the startup journey, from launch to partnerships to securing investment:
George had the stereotypical ‘launched in a garage’ experience with OneShift, building the business on the back of a free blog and nothing but posters, duct tape, and an iPad. It now has over 630,000 users, with 38,000 businesses on the platform across Australia and New Zealand. It raised $5 million in 2013.
Prasad, on the other hand, spent the early years of her career in the Private Equity Group at Goldman Sachs. She then worked as a product manager at Atlassian, Paperless Post, and Rent the Runway before launching her own start FitSessions, which partnered with ClassPass last year.
At Freelancer, O’Kane is responsible for formulating and executing the plans of the company’s product and technical teams, as well as company-wide budgeting, human resources, training, onboarding, and general process improvement. He has worked in online businesses since 1999, holding key leadership roles at Expedia, Fairfax Media, and Stayz.com.au.
Prior to Blackbird, Bartee cofounder Southern Cross Venture Partners after helping to build early-stage investing at Macquarie Bank. He was also the CEO of Mantara, a company that creates high performance, content-based message routing systems.
General Assembly will also be hosting a panel in Melbourne, moderated by Anna Reeves, creator and CEO of That Startup Show. On the panel will be Rod Cuthbert, founder of Rome2rio; Adrian Stone, cofounder and lead investor at Angel Cube; and Didier Elzinga, CEO at Culture Amp. Our own Mat Beeche will also be coming down to say hello.
