Tech entrepreneur Dan Norris launches online course based off his book ‘The 7 Day Startup’

Last year Dan Norris, cofounder of WP Curve and Black Hops Brewery, published a book called The 7 Day Startup. In a very short amount of time the practical how-to guide on how to launch a startup became an Amazon Bestseller, going on to sell over 30,000 copies across various countries including Australia, the United States, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Towards the end of 2015, Norris started thinking about turning the 7 Day Startup idea into more of its own brand – a business, per se.

He explained, “It was getting so much attention, and the book was still selling, and I thought about doing a physical event but then I thought it would be easier, and I would get a lot more content, if I did an online event, and just do it for free, and involve people in the community.”

The initial aim was to have 200 people register for the event, but there are now around 1500 people registered and Norris is now pushing to hit the 2000 mark.

The online challenge / event will take place across seven days, with something new to focus on each day. For example, there is a day where you build a learning page and a day where you talk about your marketing strategy and targets, all culminating in launching your idea on the last day – obviously.

Norris will be using Blab (a five star screening / streaming app) to conduct live sessions with various experts throughout each day, and some of that content will then be repurposed for things like podcasts that members can take advantage of after the event.

The challenge is free, but a paid membership already exists for the 7 Day Startup’s existing community. This yearly membership, which sets members back US$199 per annually, provides access to private Facebook and Blab groups.

The entire concept for the 7 Day Startup book came from the experience of Norris working on another startup venture for seven years before giving up on that idea to then follow it up with WP Curve which he and his cofounder launched in seven days. WP Curve is a SaaS model business right now on track to do over $1 million in revenue per annum, with the startup currently doing over US$83,000 per month in subscription fees.

In addition to this, Norris also decided to launch a craft beer brand and brewery called Black Hops Beer – again he has used many elements found within the 7 Day Startup model to get the business off the ground with his partners. The company was also the first brewery to ever conduct a successful crowdfunding campaign in Australia, using Pozible.

The 7 Day Startup Challenge kicks off tomorrow, and has a veritable who’s who of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Australia joining Norris for the ride, including Nathan Chan (founder of Foundr Mag), Erika Geraerts (cofounder of Frank Body), and Alan Crabbe (Cofounder of Pozible) to name a few.
